A Wall in Eden takes what is literally the world’s oldest story and makes it new. Those of faith, the “people of the book”, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, will find within it elements which will strengthen that faith. At the same time, they will find things which will challenge beliefs based on centuries of tradition, rather than the actual content of their respective holy books.
Both those of faith, and those of no particular faith, will find a compelling story, because aside from religions, theology and beliefs, our shared humanity makes the story of the Garden all our stories. Decisions forever made in the face of incomplete information, the search to find our place in an often mysterious world, and our relationship with God and fellow man are issues we all eventually must deal with, one way or the other. We are Adam and Eve.
As a wise person once said, “There is really only one story. It is merely told, over and over, in infinite variety.” A Wall in Eden takes the traditional, accepted story of Eden, and portrays it as a love story. Asked about that point, the author, Darrell McLaughlin responded with his own question, “It is any worse to take the story of Eden and portray it as a love story, than to take what really always has been, is and will be a love story and portray it as anything less than what it really is?”

This is the story of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden before they got tossed, told from various perspectives, Adams, the Serpents, which are some of the funniest parts, and from Eve's perspective. I took it as a fictional coming of age story you'll have the most fun, if you take it serious from a religious accuracy then you'll likely to be a little put out...

It seems mostly based in Catholic, and Jewish early works with some Islam mixed in, but religion itself oddly is really very secondary to the story, this is more about the relationships between the central characters, Adam, The Lord (son), and the Serpent, and then about half way through Eve shows up. The very nature of the dialogs makes it clear it is not even pretending to be an authentic representation, but clearly a, "it might have gone down like this" sort of thing.

It is long, this allows for entertaining side trips, like Adams initial relationship with fire, when the first one went out he spent days looking for it until the Lord made him another one, over time he finally figured out it really did not "go" anywhere, it went out, and while not really understanding that either, at least he stopped looking for it every time it happened :)

The story is a series of discussions and musings centered on Adam, and I liked his conversations with the Serpent the best. With both the Lord and Serpent, there was always a very strong almost menacing undertone, an element of fear subtlety woven into a light and even humorous conversation. Good thing the Lord was between Adam and God The Creator, this is a guy with zero sense of humor when it comes to questions.

The relationship with Eve is great as you see it develop, almost Blue Lagoon style, however Eve bringing that new everything is amazing fresh perspective we saw in Adam at the start but evolves though the book as he "wonders" more and the Serpent works on him.

Of course this all leads up to the well-known ending but you may never look at Adam and Eve leaving the garden the same way again, and I will not spoil it by saying more, but it is worth the trip to the end.

In any event, it was a fun read and more than once I had to stop while laughing and a couple of times to ponder, you can get enough "feel" from the pre-read to style but no real insight as to where the story leads other than the obvious ending.
